People often ask me – why do I copy?
There is an opinion that one should not copy – it is better to paint a poor picture, but one’s own. Nowadays, thats what most people do. I think it’s better to copy El Greco or Rubens – it’s more beneficial to the art market.
To me, painting a copy of an old master’s artwork is like repeating a record, then abstracting from the result, perceiving the painting hanging on the wall as an artifact, as a masterpiece, an idea, a thought of an old master that you can unravel every day, feeling truly surprised and delighted.
The word ”copy” often has a negative connotation. Yes, it is a copy of a painting by an awesome Dutch or Italian artist. But the original artwork hangs in a museum abroad, while a copy is in your living room. You can contemplate it every day – it’s nice, prestigious and respectable. It’s even more respectable to have the original, envious people would say. Yes, but most masterpieces are in museums, and very few people would hang a 1 million dollar painting on the wall. They would rather keep it in a safe deposit box and hang a pro copy instead.
